The KBTproject brings together Soft Matter Physicists and Physical Chemists in order to tackle the fundamental Kinetic questions of particle Translocation across self-assembled Bilayers. We propose to address the key question of “how” and “how fast” particle translocation occurs across biomimetic membranes by an unprecedented combination of techniques covering six orders of magnitude in length scales and nine orders of magnitude in timescales. This fundamental question will be addressed by a common effort in Physics and Chemistry to with the double goal i) of delivering a family of hybrid self-assembled bilayers and functionalized particles covering a wide range of translocation control parameters and ii) of combining a number of Physical techniques to study the kinetics of particle translocation from the angstrom to the hundred micrometers length, in a time window from ten microseconds to a few days. The KBT project will not only use up-to-date technology but will also develop new technology to push the limits of current setup measurement possibilities for Surface Force Apparatuses, time resolved cryogenic sample preparation for Electron Microscopy and concomitant Fluorescence and RICM detection. A significant impact of our results is expected on present discussions about environmental nanoparticle innocuity.
